The next generation of young activists and philanthropists join GLIDE President and CEO Karen Hanrahan, GLIDE Co-founders Rev. Cecil Williams and Janice Mirikitani, and the GLIDE family to support GLIDE’s half-century of helping the most vulnerable and marginalized, at the Tenth Annual GLIDE Legacy Gala on Saturday, September 7 at August Hall in San Francisco.
Every year the GLIDE Legacy Gala honors individuals and groups who have made an impact on communities with their unique talents, innovative leadership, and passion. This year’s Reverend Cecil Williams Legacy Award will go to The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence for their devotion to community service, ministry to those on the edges, efforts in promoting human rights, and respect for diversity and spiritual enlightenment. The Janice Mirikitani Legacy Award will go to Mpumi Nobiva,an international speaker and communication strategist, graduate of the first class of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, and current Leadership Academy board member for her domestic violence and HIV/AIDS advocacy in South Africa.
“It is inspiring to see this young generation of philanthropists supporting GLIDE. We are building on our fifty-plus–year history to create a new generation of services to help those in crisis and poverty, and the support that GLIDE receives from the Legacy Gala and its generous and philanthropic attendees will help us meet those goals,” said GLIDE President and CEO Karen Hanrahan.

About Mpumi Nobiva
International speaker and communication strategist Mpumi Nobiva has spoken at the White House, congressional fundraisers, corporate functions and nonprofit initiatives in several countries. Mpumi grew up in South Africa, and, at age nine, lost her mother to HIV/AIDS, leaving her orphaned like millions of other children in Sub-Saharan Africa. Reared in material poverty but spiritual wealth by her grandmother, she excelled in the first class of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa before coming to the United States to study. She currently holds a master's degree in Strategic Communications from High Point University and serves as the first alumnus on the Board of Directors of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. As NationBuilder's first Leader in Residence, Mpumi is developing the digital infrastructure for Share Your Story Africa—an initiative inspired by her advocacy work uniting youth against HIV/AIDS and domestic violence in South Africa—all while sharing her powerful story at events around the world. She also is experienced in hosting events and facilitating workshops.
Building on its 50-year legacy, GLIDE challenges inequities and stands with the poor, people of color, LGBTQ persons, and others facing oppression, isolation and stigma, while offering a holistic, integrated model of programs and services to address the complex needs of the community. Today, GLIDE continues to deepen its impact and extend its reach to thousands of individuals and families in need. Through comprehensive services, fearless advocacy and spiritual connection, GLIDE remains a powerful beacon of hope for a healthier, more just and inclusive city.
